Real Madrid signs Kylian Mbappé following years of rumors

The 25-year-old French World Cup winner joins a Madrid squad that is already stacked with quality and fresh off its most recent European victory.

MADRID — Kylian Mbappé is now a member of Real Madrid.

Madrid announced on Monday that it had signed a five-year contract with the France international, uniting one of the game's greatest players with its most prosperous organization. 

 

After years of Madrid teasing the player who succeeded Lionel Messi as the greatest player in the game, the announcement was made. Mbappé called it "a dream come true" on X. "So thrilled and honored to be accepted into my ideal club. No one can truly comprehend my current level of excitement. 

Madridistas, or Madrid supporters, I can't wait to see you and I appreciate all of your amazing support. "Hala Madrid!" The letter was written in three languages: French, Spanish, and English. The post included pictures of a young Mbappé visiting the club while sporting a Madrid jacket. 

One picture was of the legendary Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid. Madrid withheld all of the transaction's financial information. Additionally, it did not immediately state when the player—who is now training with France for the European Championship—will be made official.

His signing might bring back Madrid's legendary "galatico" teams, which had some of the best players in the world, including David Beckham, Luis Figo, Ronaldo of Brazil, Zinedine Zidane, and Karim Benzema.

 

Up until now, Mbappé has only played club soccer for French teams: Monaco initially, then Paris Saint-Germain for the previous seven seasons before leaving as a free agent when the team was unable to convince him to extend his contract.

Mbappé chose not to exercise his option to sign a two-year contract extension. Madrid made PSG an offer of 180 million euros in 2021, but PSG turned it down because PSG had already paid Monaco for a youthful Mbappé years earlier. 

Since the powerhouse failed to lock him up when Mbappé toured the club's facilities at the age of 14, Madrid president Florentino Pérez made signing Mbappé a strategic club priority. Instead, he decided to enrol in Monaco's development program, and when he assisted the Principality club in reaching the Champions League semifinals in 2017, he shot to fame as a teenager. 

Madrid's 2021 proposal was rejected by the Qatar-backed PSG, but since Mbappé's contract was set to expire the following year, Madrid assumed that the player, who had never disguised his want to play for the Spanish team, would travel south of the Pyrenees in 2022. 

Mbappé surprised Pérez and the majority of the soccer world by signing a contract extension to "continue his adventure" in Paris, however French President Emmanuel Macron urged him to stay. Madrid defeated Mbappé's PSG in the knockout stages to win the 2022 Champions League.

After Mbappé rejected his club two years prior, Pérez stated that it could have been better if he hadn't come. Nevertheless, no relationships were harmed, and Madrid is now the free agent home of a once-in-a-generation talent. 

Mbappé speaks and studies Spanish while he was at Monaco, which could help him fit in well with a team that also includes French players Ferland Mendy, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Eduardo Camavinga. Mbappé's résumé includes seven French league titles, four French Cups, a World Cup victory at the age of 19, a World Cup final hat trick at the age of 23, and a track record of controlling games with his scoring power. Captain France is Mbappé.

He became the second teenager after Pelé to score in a World Cup final as they won the tournament in 2018. Four years later, when Argentina's Messi defeated France in the World Cup final, he became one of just two players in history to score a hat trick. 

Mbappé lost the lone Champions League final he participated in in 2020, failing to lead PSG to the ultimate prize of a championship. 

Additionally, he was scoreless in both of this season's quarterfinal legs against Dortmund. Mbappé, who scored 256 goals for PSG overall—including a club record 175 in the French league—left the team as its all-time top scorer. He had 44 goals in his best season with PSG and led the French league in scoring for six straight years.
